Mukono District Hands Over Briquette Machines to Empower Katosi Women Fish Processors.

Mukono District Headquarters:

In a continued effort to promote environmental sustainability and economically empower local communities, Mukono District Local Government, through its Production Department, has officially handed over briquette-making machines to the Women of Hope Katosi Fish Processors Association.

These machines are designed to produce briquettes from biodegradable waste, offering a clean and environmentally friendly alternative source of energy for fish smoking. The intervention is intended to reduce the use of charcoal and firewood, which have long been major contributors to deforestation in the Katosi area and its surrounding ecosystems.

Speaking at the official handover ceremony held at the District Headquarters, Mr. Stephen Muhumuza, Deputy Chief Administrative Officer of Mukono, who represented Ms. Elizabeth Namanda, the Chief Administrative Officer, encouraged the beneficiaries to utilize the machines responsibly and effectively.

“This is a rare opportunity. Take it seriously. Let it bring value to your business and help conserve the environment. The government has invested in your future, and now it’s your responsibility to make the most of it,” Mr. Muhumuza emphasized.

The District Production Officer, Dr. Fred Mukulu, reiterated the importance of maintaining and safeguarding the equipment “This is government property entrusted to you. Take good care of it because it is meant to serve you and future generations in your association,” he advised.

The Senior Fisheries Officer Ms. Ruth Namaganda highlighted the environmental degradation caused by traditional fish smoking methods said for years, our fishing communities have relied heavily on traditional energy sources, which has endangered forest cover. The briquette-making machine is a sustainable solution that not only protects the environment but also adds value to your products,” she stated.

She commended the members of the Women of Hope Association for their dedication to supporting their families and urged them to fully embrace this innovation for both environmental and economic benefits.

Representing the beneficiaries, Ms. Martha Mawanda Nangobi, Team Leader of the Association and President of the Mukono District Development Forum, expressed heartfelt appreciation to the district leadership.

“We used to mold briquettes with our hands, which was tiresome and inefficient. This machine will greatly ease our work, improve production, and enhance our income. We thank the District for entrusting us with such a valuable investment. We pledge to safeguard it and use it to improve our livelihoods,” she said.

The successful handover of the briquette-making machines to the Women of Hope Katosi Fish Processors Association underscores Mukono District’s commitment to sustainable development, environmental conservation, and inclusive economic empowerment.

This project stands as a model of how targeted government support can transform community livelihoods while addressing critical environmental challenges.
