Mukono District Headquarters:

Mukono District has convened a Health Sector Performance Review meeting to assess progress in health service delivery, identify challenges, and strategize improvements for the district’s health work plan and budget based on the previous financial year’s performance.

The meeting, held in the Chief Administrative Officer’s (CAO) boardroom, brought together key stakeholders, including Hon. Martha Nasazi, Secretary for Health and Gender and District Councilor representing Nakifuma-Naggalama Town Council; heads of departments; health officials; in-charges of health facilities; and implementing partners such as Mildmay Uganda, Naguru Teenage Centre, LWF, Nama Wellness Centre, and UNICEF.

Dr. Isaac Ddumba, the District HIV focal person, who chaired the session, said the review aimed at evaluating the district’s progress in health service delivery and identifying areas for improvement. He noted that, despite existing challenges, the district registered commendable achievements during the past year and expressed optimism that the review’s outcomes would further strengthen service delivery in Mukono.

Dr. Stephen Mulindwa, the District Health Officer, highlighted key successes, including improved maternal health services with over 72% of expectant mothers delivering in government health facilities. He also noted significant progress in tuberculosis treatment and ambulance services, with more than 95% of patients successfully transported from remote areas to hospitals.

Dr. Mulindwa encouraged residents to utilize government health facilities, where services are free of charge, and to ensure children are immunized against malaria and other preventable diseases. He also emphasized the importance of completing prescribed medications for better health outcomes.

Despite these achievements, implementing partners called for increased efforts in community sensitization on early childhood immunization. Others stressed the need to improve transportation and outreach services, especially in hard-to-reach sub-counties, and recommended strengthening Village Health Teams (VHTs) through better facilitation to mobilize and educate communities effectively.

Representing the Chief Administrative Officer, Assistant CAO Ms. Fulatu Namboozo commended health workers for their dedication and underscored the critical role the health sector plays in service delivery. She urged improvement in record-keeping and monitoring of health activities and assured health workers of the district leadership’s commitment to addressing challenges such as staffing gaps, promising continued support to improve the sector.

Hon. Jorem Kabali Kimera, Vice District Chairperson and Secretary for Finance, Planning, and Administration also the District Councilor representing Nagojje Sub-County, speaking on behalf of the LC V Chairperson, Hon. Rev. Dr. Peter Bakaluba Mukasa, praised health workers for their commitment and urged them to remain accountable and dedicated to serving the community. He emphasized that such review meetings are crucial for identifying weaknesses and implementing corrective measures to enhance service delivery in Mukono District.

The Mukono District Health Performance Review reaffirmed the district’s commitment to improving health service delivery by building on past achievements and addressing existing challenges. Through continued collaboration among health workers, local leaders, and development partners, the district aims to ensure equitable access to quality health care, promote preventive health practices, and achieve better health outcomes in the coming financial year.
